The Selby Centre Tottenham
Our new home
We are now based at The Selby Centre in Tottenham and are continuing to offer workshops for alternative provision students, mentoring, artist development, employment opportunities, training and free studio access for young creatives.
The Selby Centre is a vital community hub in Tottenham, managed by The Selby Trust. Established in 1993 it transformed a former school site into one of North London's largest multi-purpose community centers, housing over 100 charities, social enterprises, and support groups that serve the area's historically excluded communities.
Using music making as a tool for growth
Selby Studio is currently offering music making workshops to young people with little to no musical experience who are being educated in the alternative provision sector. Music making is used as a tool to foster creativity, confidence, emotional wellbeing and positive engagement with educational activities.
Supporting the local community
This fully equipped studio space with separate treated vocal booth has been fitted out with the local community in mind. We have begun outreach activities in local schools and colleges and will be expanding and structuring our offer in the coming months.
Employing Young Creatives
Employment of young creatives from London communities has been core to our charity’s mission from day one. All projects and outreach work is staffed by local young musicians who can gather experience and work opportunities through our structured programmes
Continuing the legacy
Young music creators from diverse inner-city environments have a rich 70 year history of inventing new music genres that go on to influence musicians all over the world - from the British invasion bands of the 60s, through Punk, Ska and Two Tone, all the way to Garage, Jungle, Drum and Bass, UK Funky, Grime, Afro-Swing and Drill.
